The plate
X left, Y right, each on its y = 0 (locked) line with the six zero pairs above; the forty rows a side as touching pairs; z's registration column and its column below, rising to the lock at row 40. The turned or spun side is redrawn about its pivot; a lock point is ringed gold; an unlawful row ringed red; rows below z's depth dimmed; rows beyond the measure absent.
The lawful window, at every depth
The largest inward angle (gold) and outward angle (ash) with no unlawful row, on a signed square-root scale; the dashed line the turn at which a row would come past z's registration — a surprise where it dips below the gold. The dot is the current turn.

Sign an absence
The fifth seat's one question: what would you like to sign as an absence? A −0 signed against the specific −1 of this instrument, z's registration column. The candidates are the reading's own — the row absent at the measure, a lock point not taken, the row where the hold broke — or any row. What you sign is kept in your own register only, this browser's store; nothing leaves the page and nothing enters the record. To measure back: the reading at 5 and the atlas; to walk forward, the controls.

The seats left open, as the house reads them
- left first · right first — taken as the mirror: X's marks placed from its locked line inward, Y's the same from the other side.
- "the left six of y" — read as the left side of Y: X's inner marks may reach the meeting line and not pass it.
- the bend at 1 of the 0, 1, 2 register — taken as a rigid rotation of every row at or below t about the locked line's point at depth t.
- the flip — a mark swinging over its own locked line is counted unlawful by default (the register's order lost); the checkbox admits it as the fold.
- z's local 0 · the registration — his plate shows it about one unit left of the meeting line, closer to X; it is the gap the spin locks against, a control.
- Pi — the readout precision is the pinned baseline's 4 dp, which gives the 40; it is not a control here.
- z's reading — rows are paired by their index on both sides; z holds a row while X's mark is not past Y's, passes over a row absent on either side, and stops at the first row it cannot hold.
- the fold — a row carried above its pivot (past 90°) is flagged, not refused.
- the spin — read as a phase about the side's own vertical axis, the strict projection a half-turn a segment, the slip accumulating from the origin; a lock point a mark between the registration and the meeting line; "moving toward y" the approach of the locked line.
- the measure 39 — the side arrives with its first 39 segments; the fortieth is absent, and z passes over that row.
- the registration, one column or mirrored — his plate draws one column closer to X, so Y locks over nothing and spins free; mirrored, Y locks as X does. The stake of §40 reads the one column.
- the fifth seat · the surprise · the signed absence — the house's suggestions of §41, built at his word in §42: z's depth as a reading at N; a point gained before the break; a −0 against the −1 in the reader's own register.
